Our history began in 1860, when José Sirvent Brotons and his family arrived in the port of Tarragona from their birthplace Xixona. José Sirvent decided to open a small establishment in one of the emblematic arcades of the Main Street of Tarragona and began making nougat. In November and December 1860, they concentrated on the sale of nougat and other Christmas products. When the Christmas season was over, José returned to Xixona to continue with his trade as a carpenter until the end of the summer. He would again begin his venture preparing nougat for the next season to sell in Tarragona, a process that was repeated the following years. This was how the tradition of the Sirvent family was formed; a tradition that has remained up to current times, in which Sirvent continues selecting raw materials, taking into account the resting times and even the smallest manufacturing details.
Manufacturing, which remains in Xixona, uses local products (such as Marcona almonds) and adapts its calendar to the harvesting and fallow times for each of the ingredients.
Some years later, José Sirvent Garrigós -son of José Sirvent Brotons- opened a new commercial establishment in Portalet street No. 5. A location that is still open from November onwards, selling nougat and other Christmas products.
Now in its third generation, Fernando Sirvent Ramos decided to enlarge the enlarge the professional activities of Sirvent and increase its list of products with a star range: Handmade ice cream and tiger nut milk. The artisanal manufacturing of ice cream (in Tarragona since 1955 and in Vendrell from 1970) begins, the same as with the nougat, soon before its distribution. Tiger nut milk, however, is prepared the same day so as to maintain all its qualities and excellent taste. The stability and prosperity achieved by these typical summer products encouraged Fernando Sirvent Ramos to purchase an establishment in Rambla Vella, 27 where summer and winter come together in an ice cream parlour-nougat shop.
In 1982, Joana López, manager of Sirvent Tarragona, turned the family company into a chain of establishments throughout the province of Tarragona; she and her family have opened all the new establishments to date. In 1984 an ice cream – tiger nut milk shop is opened in one of the main streets of Tarragona: Rambla Nova; as well as the establishment located in Canyelles street (dedicated to selling ice cream, coffee and nougat) and another in Plaça de la Font.
Currently, Fernando Sirvent López —son of Joana and great grandson of the founder of Sirvent Tarragona, José Sirvent Brotons— has joined the family business and works, like all the rest of the family, to continue providing products made to the highest standards of quality. Five generations that have worked to make Sirvent Tarragona a unique brand, associated to quality products and excellent service.
